Many are surprised to hear the news that gaming industry heavyweight SEGA is about to open its very own online casino.

If Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Fighter and Ecco are what spring to your mind when you hear the word SEGA, then you can be comforted in knowing that you are not alone. What few know is that gambling is a vital element in the game empire that is SEGA.

In reality, the company is just heading back to their roots. SEGA started out as Standard Games in Hawaii, and later switched its name to Service Games. The company’s target group was initially American Service Personnel who were stationed on the islands. The company’s main product was coin-operated slot machines. Even after merging with a Japanese company, Rosen Enterprises, gambling machines were the SEGA’s main product.

In later years of its existence, SEGA enjoyed great success through their different consoles, such as the Dreamcast, and the many great games it produced, which were cutting-edge for their time. When Sony’s Playstation dominated the market in the early nineties, SEGA shifted its focus from their different consoles and began to concentrate more on software, which it sold for use on the more successful, mainstream consoles.

In 2006 SEGA released their game SEGA Casino, for the Nintendo DS. Despite SEGA’s history of attractive and energetic software, the DS game was rather bland. After receiving reviews on the DS game, however, we can expect that the company’s online gaming content will be much more thrilling.

SEGA’s online casino and poker room will be running on Playtech software platform and can be expected to be functioning by the first of October. Check out other poker room and online casino reviews available at Jackpot Finder.
