“Can you remember the last time a Kansas City Chiefs-Oakland Raiders game meant something?” asked one of the funny guys at ESPN.com earlier this week. “Neither can I.”
The Chiefs-Raiders game is, unbelievably, perhaps to be considered the marquee game of NFL week 9 action.Bodog, Brobury Sports and Bookmaker all like the hometown Raiders with a minus-3 handicap, which would give a 5-4 record (its first winning record this late in the season since 2002) and sole control of the AFC West lead: Crazy stuff for a team that had gone 29-83 over the past seven seasons.
In terms of QB star power – and another weird line at the sportsbooks – the one to watch will be the Indianapolis Colts-Philadelphia Eagles game pitting the league’s top QB Peyton Manning against Michael Vick, arguably its most exciting. The injury-riddled Colts sit as a three-point underdog at BroburySports. To riff on the ESPN line, can you remember the last time an NFC team was favored over Manning’s Colts? Neither can I.
One highly interesting matchup takes place in Detroit (another bizarre line to write), where the New York Jets play the not-exactly-resurgent-but-somewhat-respectable Lions. The Jets are coming off an ugly shutout loss against the Green Bay Packers, but a porous Detroit defense (at least some things are normal) giving up 23.6 points and 350.3 yards per game should get Mark Sanchez and the boys back on track. Bodog has the over/under set at 41.5 points, though, and that could still go under with the top-notch Jets defense at full strength. Jets minus four points? They’ll cover that.
