This year marks the 103rd Monte-Carlo Masters, a men’s tennis tournament that takes place in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France.
This French commune borders Monco, where Monte Carlo can be found.
The Monte-Carlo Masters is part of the ATP Masters Series. This annual springtime event has been running since 1897, but has only been an open event since 1969. The tournament is an ourdoors event played on clay courts.
This year’s Monte-Carlo Masters runs from the 11th to the 18th of April, with the Singles and Doubles Finals both running on the afternoon of the 18th. An estimated €2,750,000 in prize money will be offered to top players.
For the past five years, Spain’s Rafael Nadal has taken first place in the singles title, with Switzerland’s Roger Federer coming in as the runner-up in three of the past five years. Not even 24 years of age, Nadal has already made his mark on the history of tennis, and already has his eye on winning again this year. Though he injured his knee during the 2010 Australian Open and had to step out of the running, he insists he’s ready to play again. Since Federer won’t be playing this year, Nadal stands a strong chance at making tournament history.
“I’ve always been a winner”, Nadal says in an official press release. “And will soon be one again!”
Whether players favor Nadal or his competition for this year’s title, now is the time to put money down.
