This is, for what of a better description, a betting system that was very popular in late 18th century France. Since that time, many a wage has been doubled or even tripled, before being eventually lost to the casino. This is simply because the casino has a "house edge", meaning that you may well win in the short term, but in the long run the casino will always be the winner.
