Unlike their major Spanish rivals, FC Barcelona, Los Blancos have remained consistent in their form and are still up at the top of the La Liga table. They were beaten out by their local capital competition, Atletico Madrid. Unfortunately, this last season saw them trophyless for the very first time. In June 2021, a new manager joined the club. Now with the respected and experienced Carlo Ancelotti, now at the helm, there is renewed hope that the next season will be one of their best.

The El Derbi Madrileño (Madrid Derby) between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is Spain's second-biggest football rivalry, behind El Clásico which is between the Spanish teams of FC Barcelona/Real Madrid matches. Though both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were formed around the same time, the former was always viewed as Franco's favourite, with the "Real" in their name meaning "Royal." The 2020/2021 season saw Los Colchoneros clinch their 14th La Liga title, beating out Real Madrid and Barca.
