Atletico Madrid: Enjoying La Liga’s The Top Spot

Without a doubt, one of the best known and most popular Spanish football clubs to play in the Spanish First Division is the Madrid based team, Atletico Madrid. As of writing, they are top of the table above Sevilla. Their old rival, FC Barcelona has gradually suffered a continuous loss of quality, both in managers and players, and are now sitting far down the La Liga table. As they are top of the table, then they’re probably a sure-fire bet for any online soccer bets. Including sites with toto jackpots like 22Bet Sportsbook.

Atletico Madrid History and Background

Club Atlético de Madrid, commonly referred to as Atletico de Madrid, is a Spanish football club based in Madrid. The club was formed on the 26th April 1903 and plays its home matches at the Metropolitano stadium, the venue of the 2019 Champions League final. Atletico goes by a few nicknames, “Los Colchoneros”, “Los Robjiblancos” and “Los Indios”, but if you want to keep things short their abbreviation is “ATM.” The Metropolitano stadium is a sizable stadium with a capacity of 68,456, the 3rd largest in La Liga. The current head coach is Diego Simeone and the president is Enrique Cerezo.

Honours

Atletico Madrid is the 3rd most successful club in Spain, with 10 La Liga titles, 3 Europa League titles, 10 Copa del Reys and 4 Super Cups. Despite 3 Europa league titles, Atletico has been unlucky in the European spotlight, competing in 3 Champions League finals but still waiting for that Champions League trophy to go to the other half of Madrid.

Atletico Madrid Famous Players

football

Atletico has had many top players play for them over the years, the most notable of recent times has to be Fernando Torres. The Spaniard came up through Atletico’s youth ranks, then went on to make 214 appearances and score 82 goals for the first team before leaving for Liverpool in 2007. Torres then returned to Atletico in 2015, and made a further 107 appearances and scored another 27 goals. Torres is Atleticos 2nd all time top scorer, behind Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann.

Recent Times

If you’re a soccer betting fan and thought of betting on Atletico Madrid, recent times have been both successful and frustrating for Atletico fans. In the 1999/2000 season Atletico Madrid, against all odds, saw relegation. Atletico then spent 2 seasons languishing in the Segunda division before winning it in 2001/2002. The most successful season of recent times has to be 2013/2014, as Atletico won La Liga for the first time in 18 years and made it to the Champions League final. However, Atletico also suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to neighbours Real Madrid, crushing the hopes of Atletico fans. Atletico made the Champions League final again in 2015/2016, but it was the same outcome against the same team, as Atletico lost 5-3 on penalties to Real Madrid after cancelling each other out with a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

2018/2019 Season

The 2018/2019 season saw Atletico finish 2nd in La Liga. They reached the last 16 of the Copa del Rey, yet suffered defeat in the last 16 of the Champions League, though were victorious in the UEFA Super cup. The top goalscorer for the season, with the best jackpot winning strategies, was Antoine Griezmann with 15 goals in La Liga. The total spent on transfers was €88M and their total income from transfers was €12.6M.

2019/2020 Season

With a total of 27 games played, Atletico Madrid has had a poor season, sitting 6th place with 45 points. However, that being said, Atletico were only 2 points off third place. Atletico was knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the round of 32, Madrid was in the quarterfinals of the Champions League after an emphatic victory over European Champions, Liverpool. Atletico were runners up in the Supercopa de Espana. Their spending on transfers was a mind-boggling 260 million Euros and their income from sales was 237.5 million Euros.

2020/2021 Season

Ending on top of the La Liga ahead of both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid enjoyed a mixed season. Though they managed to win the football jackpot and head La Liga, which would have been a great football bet, they had to settle for second place at the Copa Del Rey. Unfortunately, they only came second in their group in the UEFA champions league. They were beaten for the top spot by the Germans of Bayern Munich. The season saw the transfer out of Thomas Partey to Arsenal for €50M. Also the transfer in of Álvaro Morata coming from Chelsea for €56M. The highest goal scorer of the season was Luis Suárez, knocking in 21 La Liga goals.

If you want to bet on them for the next season and maybe win the jackpot online, then head over to 22bet Sportsbook. They have a tasty welcome bonus waiting for all new players of 122% up to €100!

Playing Style

football

Atletico is famous for its defensive style of football. However, it certainly works. Atletico has conceded the second least goals in La Liga. As well as having the 3rd most clean sheets with 11. Atletico enjoys less of the ball, with an average possession of 48%. However, the cost of this defensive style may be a lack of goals. In fact, Atletico only has an average of 1.1 goals per game, ranking them 12th in La Liga. Clean finishing may be an issue for Madrid as they have the second most big chances missed with 45. Probably not a team to make an accumulator bet with. Atletico is not afraid to get stuck in with an average of 10.3 tackles per game, ranking them first in La Liga.

Key Players at Atletico Madrid

Thomas Partey has been a target for many clubs for a few seasons now. The midfielder has an average match rating of 7.16 and a market value of €50M. Partey likes to take players on, with an 87% dribbles succeeded rate. The Ghanaian has 988 accurate passes in 24 appearances for Atletico this season. Keiran Trippier might turn out to be a steal for €25M. The Englishman has been a key part of Atleticos defensive success this season. However, at 29 years of age, we might have already seen the best of Trippier as he’s unlikely to improve. The final key player we’re going to mention is Koke. The one-club man has been a pivotal part of this Atletico team since 2009. The right midfielder has made 452 appearances for Atleticos first team, scoring 42 goals.
