The World’s Greatest Football League?

It was way back in 1922 when the director of a Spanish Football Club, Jose Maria Acha, came up with the idea of starting the First Division in Spain. This would represent the top 10 clubs on the Iberian Peninsula and they would compete in what would be the Primera Division. Over time, this new soccer league, La Liga, would grow in popularity and gradually increase the number of member clubs over the years.

What Is La Liga?

Today, La Liga is the First Division of all Spanish football. It includes some very famous clubs such as FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. After its foundation in 1929, it still remains one of Europe’s top leagues. A big change occurred in 1997 when the league accepted 20 teams. Of these, on an annual basis, 3 teams are promoted to La Liga, and three are relegated back into the Segunda División, also known as La Liga 2, every season. The league is currently at the top of UEFA’s League coefficient meaning that from a statistical point of view, it is technically the best league in the world.

On the whole, all games taking part in the league average attendance of around 26,900 fans. After the UK’s Premier League and the German Bundesliga, La Liga is the third most popular football league in Europe. In fact, it’s fair to say that no league has more UEFA Champions League title wins than La Liga. It certainly is one of the most famous and talented leagues in the world of football. Having said that, things are now changing as teams that grew too financially fat over the years, now need to change their course and tighten their belts.

Big Names Playing In La Liga

FC Barcelona

The Spanish League have seen some of the biggest transfers in football in history take place. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale both joined Real Madrid. And then we have Neymar Jr leaving FC Barcelona for a record fee. Historically fans have seen such players as Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Luis Figo and Zidane Zidane, all playing for La Liga teams at a world-class level. Unfortunately, the leagues biggest teams have grown complacent. Both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have gradually lost their shine. After unlimited spending, debts now need to be paid. As a result, Messi now plays for Paris Saint-Germain and Ronaldo for Manchester United.

Some La Liga Records

The league has been won a record 33 times by Real Madrid. In the second place, Barcelona has 26 league titles under their belt. As for the players with all scoring records that honour goes to both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi has an astounding record of 476 goals from 520 appearances. For Ronaldo, those figures are 311/292 respectively. Barcelona has always enjoyed having talented team players including Frankie de Jong, Antoine Griezmann, Gerard Pique and Lionel Messi. Both the FC Barcelona and Real Madrid fans always have high expectations. The latter has been spending considerable sums of money on signings such as Eden Hazard, Ferland Mendy and Luka Jovic. In fact, as part of their jackpot winning strategies, they have spent over 200 million Euros on these properties.

This Years League Winners, Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid

For many La Liga aficionados, Atletico Madrid has always been viewed as the underdog.  That’s because, to a certain extent, La Liga has always been a two-horse race consisting of just Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. With their new manager Diego Simeone, there has always been hope that Athletico can push through and learn how to win the jackpot, in order to reach the top tier, with a chance to play in La Liga. After all, the club does have its own superstars including Jan Oblak, Jose Gimenez, Koke and Thomas Partey. All players with easily enough talent to compete with the best from either FC Barcelona or Real Madrid.

So it was to no one’s great surprise that Los Colchoneros came from behind to beat Real Valladolid 2 – 1. This was their 11th La Liga win and the first since 2011. Now, if you’d bet on Los Colchoneros, then you would have scored a nice little football jackpot from FanTeam Sportsbook.

At The Bottom Of La Liga

Moving down the league, we can see other historic and famous clubs including Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Getafe and Valencia. All these teams represent a top level of professional football and will certainly be pushing for the Champions League at the end of the season. At the bottom of the table, there are other clubs such as Leganes, Mallorca, Celta Vigo, Eibar and Espanyol, who will be involved in a frantic relegation battle as they fight to survive to remain in one of the best leagues in the world.
