Introduction: The Best Movie Themed Slots

Movie themed slots are just a continuation of the days of pinball machines (anybody remember those?). In fact, there have been movie themed jackpot games. Today, there are as many movie themed games as there are movies to license. It’s interesting, that just because a movie is a monster hit, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the game upon which it’s based will follow suit. Likewise, some movies that bombed at the box office, prove to be favorites with the gaming community. Here we’re going to cover a few of the best and certainly most famous movie themes used in casino games.

Jurassic Park

It’s hard to believe that the very first Jurassic Park movie came out way back in 1993. The special effects have held up very well and the story is brilliant. In 2014, Microgaming licensed the original movie and quickly put out a slot machine based around the dinosaur park. Though the timing seems to be over a decade late to the party, it’s release was actually to coincide with a new Jurassic Park movie, called Jurassic World. Many say that this slot is by far the best movie related slot on the market. It has 5 reels and the game offers real-life depictions of the movie characters. There are also fantastic graphics along with a host of other top-notch features.

As you can imagine, the famous T-Rex is included in the form of a T-Rex Alert, along with 5 types of free spins. This slot certainly lives up to the movie’s excitement and terror.

King Kong: The Eighth Wonder of the World

We guess most people don’t remember the original King Kong movie from 1933. But the re-make, with Jack Black and Carl Denham which appeared eight decades later in 2005 is a cracker of a film. in 2011, Playtech bought the rights to the movie and put them to good use in a slots machine,”King Kong: Eighth Wonder of the World”. This is a five-reel slot, with a 20-line game, that really puts the oversized ape to good use. There are a number of real-life depictions of the original characters, along with great graphics which are on par with those from Jurassic Park. There are two different play modes, which are called “Jungle Mode” and City Mode”. These are pretty self-explanatory, with different playing environments, along with different symbols and bonuses. All in all, a great effort.

Movie Themed Slots: Halloween

Michael Myers has been terrorizing teenagers down at Crystal lake since 1978. So, as the movie was so popular, with any number of updates and re-makes, it was only a matter of time before a gaming company came knocking for the rights. Microgaming was that company. They produced a five-reel, fifty-line game all of which increase your jackpot winning chances. This really does a great job of creating the same atmosphere of dread and ominous horror. There are all the characters from the initial movie, including Laurie, Lynda, Loomis, and Annie. There’s a “trick or Treat” wheel to be unlocked which will deliver cash prizes. But in truth, the game only offers a miserly 500 x payout. If that’s OK with you, then you’ll still have a great time playing this slot.

Gladiator

Released in 2000, and starring Russel Crow as the General Maximus, this Ridley Scott Movie was a smashing success at the box office. Of course, though the movie does feature moments of great triumph, it also deals with a lot of suffering and all in all has a grave tone to it. The gaming rights to the movie were bought by Playtech. Interestingly enough, they didn’t opt to ignore the darkness within the story. Many of the film’s characters are there in this slot game, including Commodus, Lucilla, Juba, and Proximo. but strangely enough, there’s no Maximus, as their licensing agreement would stretch as far as Russel Crow. In spite of his absence, it’s still a great slot to play, and it has all the atmosphere of the Roman gladiatorial games. The large progressive jackpot is worth as much as €2,374,847.

Movie Themed Slots: The Expendables

In the same year as Gladiator came out, we saw The expendables make their way onto cinema screens across the world. Wildly popular, with Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, and Jet Li having a massive career boost along the way. A number of movies came out with the franchise between 2010 and 2014. The gaming company Stakelogic transformed the game for Megaways slots. This game featured six reels and between 324 to 117,649 ways to win. The maximum win is 20,000 x your original stake, which isn’t bad at all. Its many features include a “Bullet Bonus”, free spins, and the “Expendable Bonus”. All these features help make this slot as exciting as the more itself.

Creature From the Black Lagoon

For this, we’re going to step back in time to the movies that were black and white. The Creature From The Black lagoon came out in 1954 and starred Kay Lawrence. The rights for this classic movie were picked up by NetEnt in 2013. The game is a wonderful mixture of the classic movie style along with bits of terror thrown in for good measure. Both the music and the gameplay appear to be taken directly from a 1950’s movie. There are some interesting bonuses and many different types of wild cards, along with any number of jackpot winning tips and tricks.

Movie Themed Slots: Rocky

Made by Sylvester Stallone for a budget of just $1 million, the movie went on to gross over $225 worldwide. The story of the underdog boxer, Rocky Balboa as he takes on the world champion Apollo Creed is well known. Playtech bought out the gaming rights for the first four Rocky movies and they feature all of Rocky’s opponents including Creed, Drago, and Clubber Lang. we must confess that the graphics are certainly not on the same level as the previous games we’ve covered. But on the other hand, there’s a pretty cool knock out bonus. Your bonuses are dependent on just how well Rocky fights in the ring.

Terminator 2

Though the first Terminator movie was a successful movie, it’s follow up, Terminator II: Judgement Day was a smash hit. And it’s probably this last movie that’s better remembered by fans today. With Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role, his model 101 robot attempts to protect the future leader John Connor from the T-1000, sent back in time to kill Connor. This movie’s rights went to Microgaming who made a slots machine based on the second movie in the franchise. This was a five-reel, 243-ways game, which features all the characters along with some special bonuses.

Movie Themed Slots: Iron Man

This is the movie that really kicked off the MCU. It was a massive success and was followed by Captain America, The Avengers, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. released in 2008, it helped propel its star, Robert Downey Jr into the stratosphere. Playtech stepped in to grab the license for gaming and released the Iron Man slot in 2009. After this initial game release, there were a couple of other Iron Man jackpot slots that followed in succession. This slot offers great gameplay with ever-expanding wilds and unique free spins and bonuses. These free spins have Iron Man trying to shoot down various missiles and save the planet. Each time he destroys a missile then you get to win another multiplier.

Tomb Raider

This started of as a PlayStation game, proving to be a huge hit, especially among teenage boys. Paramount Pictures got hold of the film rights and knocked out a blockbuster movie with Angelia Jolie in the title role. The gaming license went to Microgaming and they in turn knocked out a slots machine. It’s a 15-line effort with five reels. Unfortunately, you don’t get anything that looks like Jolie, but instead a generic version of Lara Croft. But there’s still plenty of high-quality animation and graphics. A later version of the slot is called “Secret of the sword” and features even better graphics.

Conclusion: The Best Movie Themed Slots

As you can see, this list of games licensees is dominated by two companies, Microgaming and Playtech. Though many of these film-based slots appear to be stuck in the 1980s there are newer versions coming along. But we think that the future is bright for such tie-ups, with many new movies being converted for slots machine gaming.
